All About Adult Braces

Adult braces are a common orthodontic procedure carried out on patients of all ages, but it’s true that most times, it’s children and teens who seek treatment. The reason for this is that the NHS offers free treatment to those under 18 (though not every type of brace), and in some cases, having orthodontics at an early age can have a better outcome.

Increasingly, though, we are seeing a rise in adult braces, possibly due to celebrities seeking treatment themselves. And, as our orthodontists here in Loughborough know all too well, you can’t put a price on the value of a beautifully straight smile–not just for your confidence, but for your ability to speak, eat and chew effectively, too.

Why do adults have braces?

People of any age and stage can be concerned about the health and appearance of their smiles. And as our orthodontists say, it’s never too late to seek treatment–especially when braces can have more benefits than simply making your teeth straighter.

What are the benefits of adult braces?

Alongside the inevitable straighter smile, adult braces in Loughborough can benefit your oral health. If you have crowded teeth, it can be difficult to effectively clean between them – even with dental tape, interdental brushes and the recommended strength of toothpaste. In cases of gaps, food and bacteria can build up and potentially cause decay.

What types of brace are there?

There are many types on the market, including lingual (which attach to the backs of the teeth), fixed (which are fastened and removed at the orthodontist) and clear braces (which can be clear fixed braces or clear removable aligners, such as Invisalign). Each has its advantages and disadvantages – for example, fixed braces can be hard to clean around but are cheaper, while Invisalign clear braces are removable and almost invisible.

How do I budget for my adult braces?

We can offer a range of payment plans to help pay for your braces treatment, which is offered to those over 21 (subject to a credit check). There’s no need to pay a deposit and the repayments will be scaled according to what you borrow. It is all paid for through an easy direct debit, so you can ‘set it and forget it’.

How long does the process take?

It depends on the individual case and is something we can advise you on during your consultation with us. Many cases take between 1-2 years, but it can be a lot faster than this, depending on your unique situation.
