What are retainers?

Retainers are ideal for preventing your teeth from moving away from their new, straightened position. Retainers are custom-made for your mouth and fitted after your braces have been removed. You can also choose to have a fixed and/or removable retainer. Fixed retainers are glued to the back of your teeth and can’t be seen when you smile. Removable retainers consist of a clear slim mouthguard that fits your teeth. Both types will ensure your beautiful new smile remains unchanged.

The benefits

  • Fixed or Removable – We offer the full range of fixed and removable retainers to all patients depending on their individual needs.
  • Effective – By wearing retainers long-term we can reduce these age changes in the position of the teeth. The longer you wear retainers, the longer you can keep your teeth straight.
  • Reasons – there are two reasons for wearing retainers:
    • Teeth tend to want to move back towards their original positions. This is called relapse.
    • As we get older our teeth may start to move unpredictably, often showing some crossing over and increased in crowding.

Retainers may feel tight for a week after being fitted. You might also notice excessive dribbling, or difficulty pronouncing certain words. All these problems should resolve themselves after a few days, as you get used to the new retainer. If your retainer feels too loose, or the tightness won’t go away, please give us a call. If you have any concerns, you can go over these with your dentist before you begin teeth straightening in Loughborough.

If your retainer is removable, start wearing your spare and contact us during surgery hours to arrange to have your retained replaced or repaired. If your retainer is fixed and the wire is hurting you, please ring our emergency number.

This will vary from person to person. Your orthodontist will recommend how long and how often you will need to wear your retainer after you’ve had your teeth straightening treatment in Loughborough.

Please give us a call at your earliest convenience to arrange an urgent appointment, although please don’t use the emergency number after surgery hours. We will advise you of the fee for replacing the retainer when we speak to you.

Retainers are made to be worn after you have completed your teeth straightening treatment, to keep your newly aligned teeth in place and to prevent them from shifting back to their original position. If you don’t wear your retainer for the recommended time, your teeth may go back to how they were before treatment, undoing all the hard work that your adult braces have done.
