How to Care For Dental Implants

Tooth implants are a common choice for replacing lost or missing teeth. But how do you care for them? Once the implants are inserted and your gums have healed, there are lots of ways you can help keep them in great condition and prolong the life of your dental implants, helping ensure they last a lifetime.

1. Brush, floss and mouthwash

You might think a false tooth doesn’t need any caring for. But with dental implants, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, they need just the same great level of care that your natural teeth do – which means two minutes twice a day of brushing and flossing, with mouthwash in between. And if you find floss a bit tricky, you can always try dental tape or interdental brushes.

2. Your dentist is your friend

Here in Loughborough, we help our patients with any dental concern they have, great or small, as well as general oral care tips and techniques. It’s the same with tooth implants – we can help clean them just like we would your existing teeth, and can recommend the right toothpaste and toothbrush for great oral care.

3. Adjust your diet for your dental implants

While you can eat most foods and drinks as normal with tooth implants, you might need to take care around crunchy and hard food – think nuts and candies, and even popcorn (such as kernels). If you’re unsure of what to avoid, ask our top dentists here in Loughborough for their suggestions.

4. Don’t smoke with your dental implants

If you smoke, you leave yourself at risk of developing gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss and jaw bone recession (in other words – further lost teeth and potentially further implants). Whether it’s cigarettes, cigars or vapes, they can all cause dental concerns and we’d advise cutting down or quitting.

5. Wear a mouthguard

While lots of people have lost or missing teeth due to poor oral hygiene, medications, illness or other factors, some people lose their teeth in an accident or from an injury. We’d recommend wearing a mouthguard when playing extreme or contact sports to help minimise this risk.
